There has been a surge in interest in HomeFit training in the past weeks, with many companies seizing the value of offering HomeFit certification to check compliance of the Healthy Homes Standards, especially in the rental market. Around 50 candidates completed the new NZGBC HomeFit Assessor course between February and May. Faced with lockdown restrictions the course was swiftly adapted for delivery online, making it even easier for nationwide trainees to participate.
Most trainees are from companies who inspect rental homes for property management firms, or supply insulation, heating and other products through council or EECA subsidised home improvement schemes.
The courses have doubled the pool of potential HomeFit Assessors to more than 100, and two further courses have been scheduled to keep pace with the demand.
The training demands a good level of competence using the HomeFit web app which is fully explained, and includes a test to ensure assessors meet the standards. Not everyone is expected to pass the qualification first time, however a resit is available if needed.
“While they are taught the ins and outs of the Residential Tenancies Act, the HomeFit app makes assessing whether or not a rental home complies very straight forward,” according to NZGBC residential tools manager Eion Scott, who facilitates the course.
