New 6 Star Green Star distribution centre opened by L’Oréal

Written by NZGBC | 25 November 2025

L’Oréal Groupe this week opened its expansive new ~12,000 square metre facility in Favona, Auckland, a development featuring a 6 Star Green Star Design Certified Rating.

The distribution centre represents a $20+ million combined investment by L’Oréal Groupe and the James Kirkpatrick Group, “underscoring L'Oréal's dedication to meeting the evolving demands of consumers and strengthening its operational footprint in New Zealand.”

This new centre more than doubles the previous distribution centre capacity and has been developed to support L’Oréal Groupe’s business growth for the next decade, optimising efficiency and scalability to exceed the 12 million products sold in 2024.

This design has officially achieved a 6 Star Green Star Design Certified Rating - the highest possible rating signifying "World Leadership" in environmentally sustainable building design. This is a rare accomplishment, being the first such rating under the “Design & As Built NZ v1.1” tool in New Zealand.

Andrew Eagles, Green Building Council chief executive says: “L’Oréal’s new distribution centre was a fantastic example of a modern efficient, healthy and sustainable commercial building.”

“Re-using existing structures is the ideal way of reducing the amount of carbon used in construction. The built environment accounts for 20% of New Zealand’s carbon emissions, so smart decisions like this make a real difference,” says Andrew.

“And buildings like this are also good for business, as cutting water use and energy use – particularly in a time of soaring power prices – improves the financial bottom line. Well done L’Oréal and the James Kirkpatrick Group.”

The new distribution centre features the reuse of an existing structure with low embodied carbon design. It will operate on 100% renewable energy, with solar energy and extensive use of harvested rainwater.

The expected environmental performance includes reductions exceeding 80% in upfront carbon use, and reductions surpassing 55% in both energy and potable water consumption.
