What you need to know

Airtightness is essential for energy efficiency and reducing running costs, and is globally recognised as best practice for both homes and buildings. As an industry we can see the value, but do we fully understand how to successfully design, build and test it?

Over the next few months, we’re teaming up with some of Australasia’s best airtightness specialists to bring you a 4-part series ‘Airtightness in Aotearoa’ - a series highlighting all stages of the process, and culminating in an in-person live blower-door demonstration.

This is a fantastic opportunity to understand the fundamental design, construction and testing of airtightness, so you can deliver an airtight home or building. For those involved in NZGBC certifications, it’s an excellent chance to find out more about this vital element, which is rewarded and encouraged in both Green Star – Design & As Built and Homestar. It’s also a great opportunity to get ahead, with the latest version of Green Star - Green Star Buildings NZ introducing airtightness as a minimum requirement when it launches later this year.

Fill in the gaps in your knowledge, and help fill in the gaps in our buildings.

  1. Part One | Design - Wednesday 3 April
  2. Part Two | Build - Wednesday 1 May
  3. Part Three | Test - Wednesday 5 June
  4. Part Four | Action – Date coming soon

Speaker details

Brad
Brad Crowley

Senior Manager - Buildings & Communities - NZGBC

Managing the Green Star rating tool Brad assists the team and identifies new opportunities to use the quiver of Green Star tools (Design and As-Built, Performance, Interior, Communities) to make buildings better.

While getting his Geography Master’s degree back in the late 1990s Brad first heard about Sustainability and Green Buildings. Ever since he has been advocating for green buildings and sustainability including starting up his own business creating and installing rainwater catchment systems in Portland, Oregon.  Brad has a positive outlook on seeing what he and NZGBC can do to encourage healthier and more environmentally friendly buildings and communities in Aotearoa.

Jon-Davies
Jon Davies

Tech support and Education Manager - Proclima Oceania

Jon oversees Pro Clima’s education offering across Australia and New Zealand. He brings his knowledge of on-tools building combined with his experience in product analysis to clearly point out the areas of our building code and practices that need improvement.

His recent research into retrofitting external insulation onto occupied buildings is starting to generate interest where the typical cost, disruption, high complexity and low performance of renovation needs to be changed for buildings and people.

Matthew
Matthew Cutler-Welsh

Business Development Manager - Residential - NZGBC

Working with Homestar and HomeFit,  Matthew’s mission is to inspire people to make a better place to live.

After completing his Honours Degree in Natural Resources Engineering Matthew now has 15 years of experience leading residential energy efficiency projects and education programmes in New Zealand and Australia. In 2016 he joined the Board of the Passive House Institute New Zealand.

An experienced presenter, facilitator and podcaster, Matthew has interviewed over 200 architects, builders and industry experts from around the World on the Home Style Green podcast. He is also the co-host of the Passive House Podcast.

Mike-Lyon
Mike Lyon

Application Engineer - AeroBarrier

Working for The Element Group, an energy consulting firm, he spearheaded the growth of the company – expanding from a handful of clients across twelve states and over 300 multifamily and single family low incoming housing projects requiring specific energy and sustainable certifications.

In the summer of 2018 a demonstration of a new advanced air sealing application, AeroBarrier, convinced Mike and his colleagues this was the positive disruption to advance building techniques the industry needed. After investing in the technology, two years and 400+ AeroBarrier seals later, Mike felt it was time to personally make a larger impact, contribute not just on a regional scale for AeroBarrier but on a national scale.

Les Gates, Design Manager3
Les Gates

Design Manager - Hawkins

Les Gates is a Design Manager for Hawkins Construction and has worked in construction for the past 17 years in New Zealand and London.

Primarily site-based, Les prefers living the design and construction process at the coal face, on site with the practical knowledge of those around him, being able to see firsthand what works and what doesn't. With a keen interest in architecture and sustainable building practices, he enjoys the challenges and variety that commercial construction affords.

Recently Les has helped complete the University of Auckland Human Sciences Building (B201) project - a groundbreaking adaptive reuse project which was awarded 93 points Green Star Design points (as-built pending). Part of this project's Green Star innovation credit involved testing and proving the building's airtightness. Les shares his experiences managing this process from inception to completion.
