Why talk housing in May 2024?

Housing is always a huge topic, with supply and affordability consistently on the media and political agenda. Increasingly, we’re also seeing the role of housing in tackling the cost of living come into focus, as well as growing pressure for housing to play its part in addressing our carbon emissions. 2024 is a massive year for us to tackle all of these issues. This year we’ve got a new government set to establish its new housing policies and fulfil its critical role of setting our second emissions reduction plan. The Housing Summit will come hot off the heels of budget 2024, with government policy and investment providing a backdrop to the day’s discussions. As a sector we have a huge opportunity to learn from one another, to pull inspiration from the world-leading examples shared on the Housing Summit 2024 stage, and to make real progress in delivering healthier, more efficient, greener homes and communities for New Zealanders.

How do I get to the Housing Summit?

We fully encourage the use of public transport, so much so we will be giving away prizes for the best method of carbon zero transportation!

The Auckland Transport Journey Planner will help you plan public transport across bus, train and ferry in Auckland. 

Should you need to drive, the Civic Car Park is a short distance from Aotea Square, Aotea Centre. Please note, this is paid parking and is not included with your ticket.

Is there an accommodation provider?

Our official accommodation partner is The Hotel Britomart. We will be releasing more details on the accommodation details soon. 

What is the cancellation policy?

Full payment for registration fees must be received upon registration. If you have registered for an event and are no longer able to attend, a substitute delegate may take your place at the discretion of NZGBC.  

If you cannot transfer your booking, a full refund may be provided where our event manager receives notification (events@nzgbc.org.nz) at least 10 business days before the date of the event. If notice of cancellation is not provided or transfer arrangement made less than 10 days before the event, we are unable to provide a refund.  

Please note that for our Housing and Green Property Summits, this cancellation notice period is extended with refunds only available if we receive 20 business days’ notice.  

Refunds will not be given in any other circumstances except as required by law.

Yes, we will allow time during the breaks, and will be hosting a Networking Drinks immediately after the closing of the Summit. 

Who is our international keynote speaker, Rob Pannell?

Rob Pannell is a leading voice on low energy and low carbon building, having helped oversee a huge transition in the UK working with government and the industry to progress major reform and new ways of building. Rob was previously Managing Director at the Zero Carbon Hub where he worked closely with ministers, senior civil servants and the construction sector to advise on zero carbon policy. Prior to that he was a leading figure in the construction industry with over 35 years of experience with Taylor Wimpey UK, one of the country’s largest home builders, where he held senior roles including UK Director. He now supports the UK Government and local councils on low energy and low carbon buildings through his company The Buildings Hub, as well as lecturing at Bath University’s Architectural and Engineering faculty, and he’s an advisor to house manufacturer TopHat that constructs low carbon, timber houses in a factory.

There’s lots regulators, industry, and even home owners can learn from him and the experience of the UK. The work he did at the Zero Carbon Hub started after the hub was announced way back in 2008. They’re over a decade ahead of us when it comes to sustainable homes. In Aotearoa the homes we build now are heavy polluters, with research showing the homes we build now emit five times too much carbon. Sustainable buildings are a huge lever for our energy sector – we can massively reduce demand and subsequently the need for urgent new generation. Transpower says we need 70% more power generation. If we achieve net zero buildings, the sector will not draw as much electricity, leaving power for other sectors such as transport. It’s also super topical given we committed at COP in November to doubling our energy efficiency each year. Homes and buildings are an important part of delivering on that commitment.
