After over 18months, the consultation process tailoring the new framework “Green Star Buildings” for the New Zealand market is almost complete. Join us, along with our technical partner, NDY and project management partner RDT Pacific for an update on the progress so far and the journey ahead.

  • Insight on the development and consultation process so far including the approach to governance by the Green Star Advisory Committee 
  • The role of the Expert Reference Panels who assembled and collated guidance from subject matter experts 
  • Broad outline of Green Star Buildings NZ as the next generation certification tool responding to global megatrends on sustainability in the built environment, supporting ESG strategies, and reporting requirements  
  • Transitioning from Design & As Built v1.1 to Green Star Buildings  
    - Steps already in place on embodied carbon and climate adaptation and resilience
  • Changes to be aware of including: 
    - Key terminology
    - Categories vs credits
    - Minimum requirements to be met on registration 
  • Defining Net Zero Ready Buildings 
  • Recalibration of expectations on 4, 5 and 6 star Green Star Buildings 
  • Launch calendar and transitioning from Design & As Built NZ v1.1 to Green Star Buildings NZ 
  • Indications from the market and the appetite to demonstrate leadership

Brad is the Manager of the Green Star rating tool where he assists the Green Star team and identifies new opportunities to use the quiver of Green Star tools (Design and As-Built, Performance, Interior, Communities) to make buildings better.

While getting his Geography Master’s degree back in the late 1990s Brad first heard about Sustainability and Green Buildings. Ever since he has been advocating for green buildings and sustainability including starting up his own business creating and installing rainwater catchment systems in Portland, Oregon.  Brad has a positive outlook on seeing what he and NZGBC can do to encourage healthier and more environmentally friendly buildings and communities in Aotearoa.

Joe Quad

Manager - Buildings & Communities - NZGBC

With a background in mechanical engineering and sustainability consulting, Joe is a key part of the Green Star team. He helps projects achieve their sustainability targets and develops new standards to continually challenge the construction industry to strive for more environmentally friendly buildings.

After completing his degree in Building Engineering in Montreal, he spent almost a decade working in the consulting roles on a wide range of projects across New Zealand, Canada and the US. Initially focusing on mechanical engineering, his passion for the environment quickly drew him into the world of sustainable building design.

NZ Sustainability Lead - NDY

Justin works to deliver leading sustainability solutions across the built environment, encompassing key issues such as resource efficiency, whole-of-life impacts, climate resilience, ecological impacts, human health & wellbeing and community impacts.
He is genuinely passionate about pushing the industry forward, to make meaningful contributions in addressing climate change and positively impacting the community and future generations. With a background in mechanical design engineering, he understands that these challenges require innovative, practical and scientifically-rigorous sustainability solutions.

Simon Wilson

Director - RDT Pacific

Chair - Green Star Advisory Committee

Sustainable construction has played a significant role in Simon’s professional life. He has held essential positions within NZGBC since 2009. He is a trusted advisor to our broad client base on contractual and procurement matters. His extensive project management experience in a range of property sectors includes: commercial, healthcare, fitout, industrial, and public facilities.

Simon provides strategic property advice to public sector clients and significant institutional land developers. He has extensive skills and experience in aligning and managing leasing arrangements between landlords and tenants.

Simon has also contributed to the development of Site Master Plans such as the Whangarei Hospital Campus for the Northland District Health Board, building an excellent understanding of how capital works projects fit within a broader organisational context.
