Electrifying Existing Buildings

This is an educational video recording of a segment of the electrification masterclass we run at NZGBC.
Following the success of the recent Electrification Existing Buildings masterclass that was delivered with EECA, Beca and Argosy, we are pleased to release the video recording. This educational video highlights some effective approaches to removing fossil fuel sources from existing buildings, such as natural gas.
If you are developing a business case for electrification and considering, for example, alternatives for gas boilers or systems, this is the course for you! Fuel switching is a key step in EECA’s Commercial Buildings Sector Decarbonisation Programme and important to help future proof our existing building stock by lowering emissions.
Bobby Shen, Senior Manager – Existing Buildings NZGBC introduces the topic and some key points on why electrification should be considered as per NZGBC’s Guide to Electrification. Adam Dyson from BECA then deep dives into the considerations and information you need for a data-driven approach, and some technical strategies toward achieving an efficient system.
Three key steps that Adam shares in the video:
1. Reduce the thermal load
2. Challenge the nameplate values of equipment
3. Use thermal storage for peak loads
Adam also talks about the risks associated with like-for-like systems replacement and oversized systems.
This video is a recording of parts of an interactive masterclass course including the q&a, and group exercises that helped participants formulate their own questions and strategies for electrifying their buildings. Look on our courses page for the latest courses or contact education with your interest for the next masterclass.
During the full interactive session, there was also an insightful presentation by Saatyesh Bhana from Argosy Property, providing a client and facilities manager perspective, demonstrating the uplift in rental and valuation value of the buildings with electrification works, and a presentation by EECA talking about preparatory steps like energy efficiency covered in the sector programme.
We are grateful to EECA for supporting this shared kaupapa.
