Changes to courses, CPD points, and renewals

Recent improvements to our membership management system have enabled some updates to our course accreditation , CPD and renewals systems.
These improvements aim to make the renewal and CPD tracking process smoother, acknowledge the different courses, and to help you stay up to date with the most recent initiatives in the building industry.
As we kick off the next round of renewals, here is a summary of the changes to date.
Annual renewals
All renewals will move to an annual cycle depending on the time of year you completed your course.
I completed training after 1 February 2024
You will already have an annual renewal cycle. We will invoice you two months before your next renewal is due or let you know any outstanding renewal requirements that need to be met (e.g. gaining enough CPD points).
I completed training before 1 February 2024
You will continue on your biannual renewal date, with your next renewal considering the number of CPD points gained in the past two years. Following successful renewal, you will enter the annual renewal cycle.
You can find out more about the various CPD point requirements here
CPD points grouping
You are now able to group CPD points according to relevant course accreditaton . That means the video, webinar, course, or event will be categorised by Homestar, Green Star, NABERSNZ or HomeFit, making it easier for you to follow the latest trends relevant to you.
There can be multiple groups per event, webinar, video or course. For example, our conferences will grant CPD points to all groups.
Certificates and CPD points on NZGBC dashboard
One of the updates we signaled on launching our new system was to view your CPD points and download your certificate direct from your NZGBC dashboard. This has been under development and we expect to launch both capabilities by 1 July 2024. You’ll also receive a digital copy of your certificates via email, so keep an eye on your inbox in the coming weeks.
Updates for Homestar professionals
We currently have Homestar v4 Assessor, Homestar Designer and Homestar v5 Assessor courses, CPD requirements and renewals. Changes mean the accreditation under previous version of Homestar will no longer be able to be renewed, and we’re streamlining the renewal process for holders of multiple Homestar accreditation types.
Changes to your renewals
Homestar v4 professional qualification renewals
As we phase out the previous version (Homestar v4), our training and accreditation has been updated to reflect the most up-to-date version of the tool. If you wish to continue as a Homestar Assessor, you will need to complete the Homestar v5 Assessor course.
I hold both a Homestar Designer and a Homestar v5 Assessor qualification
We’re streamlining the renewals for holders of both accreditations so both can be processed at one time. We will be in touch as and when your soonest renewal is due.
My Homestar Designer and v5 Assessor renewals are at least 9 months apart
You will initially be required to renew your Homestar Designer accreditation for an additional year, after which it will automatically be grouped together with your Homestar v5 Assessor accreditation. Once grouped, you will only need to renew and pay for your Homestar v5 Assessor accreditation, while your Designer accreditation will be automatically renewed free of charge.
My Designer and v5 Assessor accreditation renewals are less than 9 months apart
We’ve grouped your two renewals together, meaning you’ll now only need to pay for your Homestar v5 Assessor renewal. When your Assessor renewal is due , your Designer accreditation will be automatically renewed free of charge.
For those interested in, or already working towards, completing the Homestar Designer and Homestar Assessor courses, we recommend completing both courses within 9 months to avoid extra charges.
Removal of the Homestar Practitioner qualification
On 1 February 2024 we discontinued the Homestar Practitioner accreditation. This decision follows a review of our courses and CPD based on renewal numbers and your feedback on the admin required for renewal each year.
The course set out to acknowledge entry-level knowledge of Homestar. This has now been replaced by our Homestar Fundamentals course – a basic outline of the rating tool requirements, and is now a pre-requisite for the Homestar Designer and Homestar Assessor courses.
For those who currently hold a Homestar Practitioner accreditation , this will expire upon your next renewal date.
Updates to ECCHO licensing
As a leading tool in the calculation of embodied carbon, the uptake of ECCHO has been fantastic, with more and more users taking advantage of the online Energy and Carbon Calculator for Homes. The EECHO license is no longer included as part of the Homestar Designer fee and will now be a separate annual license.
ECCHO license for Homestar Designer course attendees prior to 1 February 2024
Your course fee included two years of ECCHO access for free. After this period ends, your annual ECCHO renewal cycle will begin, with a separate Homestar Designer renewal fee.
ECCHO license for Homestar Designer course attendees after 1 February 2024
Your course fee included one year of ECCHO access for free, after which you will need to renew your ECCHO license as well as your Homestar Designer accreditation.
Updates for Green Star professionals
The Green Star Accredited Professional course has been replaced by the new Green Star Advanced course.
This ensures we’re aligned with our friends at Green Building Council Australia, and allows for separate tool-specific pathways; Green Star Advanced – Design & As Built, Green Star Advanced – Performance, and eventually Green Star Advanced – Buildings (upon release of the latest tool update; Green Star Buildings).
To attend the Green Star Advanced course, attendees will need to have completed the Green Star Fundamentals course.
New accreditation pathway – Green Star Associate vs Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP)
The new Green Star Advanced course recognises that participants require detailed knowledge of the rating tool however, may not need to provide submission and project leadership services undertaken by a Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP). As such there is now a new title available to those who complete the course but do not wish to sit the exam - Green Star Associate.
What is a Green Star Associate?
Upon attending the Green Star Advanced course, you can become a Green Star Associate. . A Green Star Associate acknowledges your commitment to supporting green design, construction and operation, and will know the ins and outs of Green Star, however you will not be a GSAP. A Green Star Associate can play a strong role in organisational commitment to the built environment, sustainability and help communicate the language of sustainability.
To keep up to date you will need to fulfill renewal and CPD requirements. The fees for this are slightly less than the GSAP fees.
What is a Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP)?
To become a GSAP you will have completed the Green Star Advanced course and passed the subsequent exam. As such, you will have demonstrated you have the knowledge and expertise to become a confident leader in guiding projects through Green Star certification, including compiling and presenting certification submissions.
