Together we’re re-shaping the built environment, the way we plan, design, build, and operate our homes and buildings. Together we’re pushing for real change, driving improvements to our Building Code, and embedding sustainability into our regulatory systems and policy. Together we’re learning, teaching, and spreading the word about what it takes to transform our buildings into low carbon, healthier spaces.
Your voice is important, and we want to hear it.
This month we’ve launched several key updates which we want your feedback on. The first is an approach to measuring embodied carbon we’ve developed alongside thinkstep anz. This is a ground-breaking piece of work that looks to establish a common methodology and scope for our sector to measure and reduce embodied carbon. There are some great embodied calculators out there that our sector has created. This work seeks to ensure projects can produce comparable results and are taking consistent approaches. The second key update is the launch of our first consultation on Green Star Buildings. This is the next major step for Green Star in New Zealand, and we’ll be looking to transition to it from Green Star Design & As Built in 2023. The New Zealand version of Green Star Buildings will:

Introduce new categories and credits reflecting issues relevant to our market now, and in the future

Prioritise the elimination of carbon emissions from the built environment, extending on those set by Green Star Design & As Built NZ v1.1

Establish a clear, well-defined entry point for best practice Green Star ratings
This will be a major update, and we want to hear your thoughts on how we can guide the sector closer to zero carbon buildings, and ensure the tool is fit for the New Zealand market. Full consultation details are available here.
Finally, as members of the NZGBC you have an opportunity to shape our direction and governance. With our Annual General Meeting fast approaching, we have two positions to fill on our board. Nominations for these positions have now closed, and ballot papers for you to vote for your preferred nominees will be with your organisation’s key membership person next week. Please return your ballot papers to us by Friday 18 November.
