New carbon reduction requirements coming 1st January

Since October 2022, all new Green Star projects have been registered under Design & As Built v1.1. One of the main changes from the previous version (v1.0) was the introduction of the Conditional Requirement for minimum Upfront Carbon reductions.
This new requirement was included to emphasise the importance of embodied carbon, and to prepare the industry for Green Star Buildings. The initial targets were a 10% reduction for 4 & 5 Star, and 15% for 6 Star projects.
As we continue to see the industry upskilling, and continue to ramp up innovation, the credit also includes a ratcheting up of these targets over time.

As of January 1st 2024, the emission reduction minimums will increase to 15% for 5 Star projects and 20% for 6 Star projects. The 4 Star threshold will remain at 10% until 2026, when all reduction targets will be further increased.

All projects registering after December 31, 2023 will be expected to meet the new targets.

We recognise that due to end of year office closures, finalising the registration process may be delayed. We will therefore only require the submittal of the registration form before December 31st to lock in the lower targets,  and will allow until end of January 2024 to complete the registration by sending in the certification agreement and payment.
