Patrick Clifford – Architectus New Zealand
Nominated by the NZGBC Board
Patrick has been responsible for the design leadership of all major projects by Architectus in Aotearoa New Zealand. He was awarded the NZIA Gold Medal in 2014, the highest honour awarded to an individual in NZ architecture, in recognition of his contribution to the body of work produced by Architectus. This work has been recognised for its clarity of intent and resolution, its careful reading of context and content and ability to advance a broad cultural agenda. Sustainability informs all the work whether it be at building or urban scale, or as a particular focus, and the practice has an ongoing commitment to the use and advancement of the tools offered by the NZGBC.
Patrick has considerable governance experience and has served on the New Zealand Green Building Council board of directors since November 2016.

Phil Smith – Collingridge and Smith Architects (UK) Ltd

Phil, Director of Collingridge and Smith Architects (UK), leads the practice’s sustainable design. He is a registered architect (UK), a licenced building practitioner class 3 and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Upon completing his studies in England, Phil was invited to join Foster and Partners, where he followed his passion for sustainable design, working on environmental projects such as the Hearst Tower, New York’s first ‘LEED’ Gold-rated office building and leading
the design of several City Academies, low-energy school buildings, the first of their kind in the UK. He also designed Z2, a concept scheme for a new city quarter of London achieving zero carbon and zero waste, which helped form the criteria for the sustainable initiatives of the London Olympics.
In 2006 Phil emigrated to New Zealand seeking a more sustainable life. In 2007 he completed his own sustainable home; established his own practice with the sole purpose of creating beautiful human spaces and was invited to be an assessor for the New Zealand Green Building Council. In 2008 he was appointed as a technical adviser, leading the team who created NZ’s first Green Star Education rating tool. Phil also designed the NZGBC HQ and in 2016 was appointed to the Advisory Group. In 2019, Phil became a qualified NZGBC Homestar practitioner.
Phil continues to innovate in sustainable design, with his 6 Green Star design for the Te Mirumiru Early Childhood Centre receiving 11 international and national awards, culminating in 2014 with the inaugural World Green Building Council’s Leadership in Sustainable Design Award.
Under Phil’s guidance, the practice strives to produce beautiful, sustainable spaces, with designs in 4 different countries, achieving 25 international and national awards to date. In 2020 the practice completed its first Early Childhood Centre in Australia, which will be certified as a Living Building Challenge building.

Belinda Mathers – Toitū Envirocare
Nominated by Toitū Envirocare
As GM Technical for Toitū Envirocare and with 20 years’ experience in environmental management and climate change, Dr Belinda Mathers has a unique skillset to contribute to the NZGBC. Belinda has extensive experience in developing and delivering programmes to improve environmental outcomes. She has been involved in audits of greenhouse emissions for approximately 700 inventories, many of which were office based organisations or organisations that work in the property development or construction sector, and has a strong interest in ensuring that life cycle emissions associated with construction, operation and end of life of buildings are well managed and align with climate science. Belinda has been working with NZGBC to develop a carbon neutral buildings certification programme, and during that time she has gained an understanding of NZGBC’s approach, values and skills. This understanding will enable Belinda to provide governance based on an understanding of both the business and the context in which they work.
Belinda’s experience has given her insights into the ambitions of businesses to reduce their emissions and the challenges that they face to achieve these ambitions. Her experience in ensuring that Toitū’s programmes are scientifically robust, aligned with best practice, and accessible by users gives her an excellent opportunity to provide governance to NZGBC that reflects customer needs and the needs of the environment for improved environmental performance.
Belinda seeks strong outcomes based on robust science and excellent communication. She aims to ensure that strategy is aligned with values and that key activities undertaken are in line with strategy.
